Vail’s ski area is divided into three main zones:

  • Back bowls: these legendary bowls, including Sun Up, Sun Down, and China Bowl, offer vast, open terrain and powder-filled descents for advanced skiers.
  • Blue sky basin: A backcountry-style area featuring playful glades, pristine meadows, and expert runs like Lover’s Leap.
The resort’s advanced lift system, including Gondola One and the Eagle Bahn Gondola, ensures seamless navigation between the three zones.

Skiing in Vail

Beginners

Vail offers optimal snow conditions from December through April. December and January consistently bring about 21 cm (8.27 inches) and 20 cm (7.87 inches) of snow respectively, dispersed across roughly 3.5 days each week, ensuring regular fresh snow. February's snowfall slightly increases to 25 cm ( 9.84 inches) and occurs more frequently, averaging 4.3 days per week. The pinnacle of snowfall arrives in the fourth week of March, traditionally the snowiest week in Vail, with an impressive 30 cm (11.81 inches) of snow over 4.3 days, making it a paradise for those who cherish Bluebird Powder Days—when sunshine and light winds follow fresh snowfall.
