A bit about Courmayeur

4.4/5EXCELLENT (757 REVIEWS)
Sitting at the foot of Mont Blanc, in the impressive Aosta Valley, there is a small but satisfying 43km of slopes; popular largely amongst intermediates owing to the vast choice of leisurely red runs. Amongst the red runs are some spectacular open bowls and cruisy blue runs for beginners and some epic off-piste powdery routes that attract the experts for good measure. The off-piste route from the summit of Punta Helbronner offers an incredible descent of 2150m and peak stoke levels to match. Courmayeur is much more than just a ski resort, often visited for the incredible scenery alone; why not take the rotating cable car for an unmatched view of Mont Blanc. This village centre is full of alpine charm and has become one of Italy's finest ski resorts. With its picturesque, car-free streets it allows visitors to safely wander to find the perfect spot for shopping, food or lively apres-ski - the resort really does have it all.

Courmayeur, Italy

Perched at the foot of Mont Blanc, Courmayeur boasts not only a rich skiing experience but also unparalleled alpine views. With a mix of runs tailored for all abilities, this resort is as inviting to the beginner as it is to the off-piste adventurer.

Skiing in Courmayeur

Beginners: For those just starting out, the Courmayeur cable car leads directly to Plan Checrouit, which houses the ski school and nursery slopes. Here, beginners can grasp the essentials and, as they progress, can try out milder blue slopes such as Chiecco. Eventually, they can challenge themselves on lengthier slopes like Pra Neyron and Diagonale Peindent.

Intermediates: Among the diverse selection of Italian ski resorts, and despite its compact size, Courmayeur offers a rich mix of intermediate blue and red pistes, starting with the south-facing blue slopes near Plan Checrouit. For those looking for more of a challenge, the Val Veny region provides stunning vistas of Mont Blanc alongside more demanding runs. Additionally, the slopes surrounding the Bertolini chairlift are often blessed with prime snow conditions, with the descent from Youla to Dolonne being a rewarding expedition.

Advanced: For those seeking adrenaline-pumping challenges, the descent from Cresta Youla to Val Veny is a long 9 km run that promises exhilaration. The Competizione is another route that should be on the radar of advanced skiers, especially when it's covered in fresh snow or shaped into moguls.

Off-piste: Off-piste enthusiasts will find Courmayeur to be a treasure trove. With access to two remarkable areas, Vallée Blanche and Val Veny, skiers are in for a treat. The former offers a 20km route leading into Chamonix, presenting various routes to explore. Val Veny, on the other hand, is a bit milder but provides enchanting tree-lined routes and pristine untracked snow.

Snowboarding: Courmayeur is a paradise for freeriders. The lower half of the mountain is a maze of trees, allowing snowboarders to discover hidden pockets of powder and natural jumps. More experienced boarders can explore the off-piste zones of Val Veny and Vallée Blanche. For those who aren't ready for these challenges, the wider blue and red slopes provide ample opportunity for carving. Additionally, a snow park near the Aretù chairlift boasts a sizeable airbag for added excitement.
